Has the Sexual Revolution Been Good for Women?
16 May 2012 | 7:01 amTim Sweetman According to this fascinating piece in the Wall Street Journal and Houston Baptist University’s periodical The City by Mary Eberstadt, it would be a solid and affirmative no. Her argument is simple: the sexual revolution has not helped but instead hurt men, women, and children: Spring came early to most of the 50 states this year—and with it, at least in the political fields, the usual crop of mixed truths, untruths, and wildly growing falsehoods. Let’s yank up one of those weeds for a little inspection: the idea that a national “war on women” is afoot. -

Windows Down, Stars in the Sky
28 Apr 2012 | 11:10 amTim Sweetman Windows down. Stars in the sky. I find it incredible that those six words can affect my heart and soul so much. They fill my imagination with graduer. Something in me just wants to slip outside into the quiet, warm darkness. Pretend to be quiet as the car dings and my keys jingle. Then crank it up. Turn down the radio. Windows down. Stars in the sky. Soft on the gas. Gentle on the turns. Hair blowing. Deep breathing. Amazing sights. G.K. Chesterton once said: “I do not think there is anyone who takes such a fierce pleasure in things being themselves as I do. The… -
Love Her Invisible Pearls
25 Apr 2012 | 8:46 amTim Sweetman My good friend Sean Perron has some wise words over on his blog about loving your wife (or in his case, his future wife). I have been greatly helped by both his and Spencer Harmon’s writings on their blog, and this is no exception. We are to remain true and faithful in loving our wives who are beautiful because they have been made in the image of God, and because of that inner beauty we can see as she grows in true and lasting beauty as she becomes more like Christ. #1. Remind her that she is beautiful because she is made in the image of God. Before brushing over this, we… -
Four Lies About Faithfulness
25 Apr 2012 | 8:39 amTim SweetmanSo often we buy into the lies of not only the world around us, but of our own “Christian” culture about faithfulness. Normal ministry is no longer acceptable. Small churches, although the norm, are not considered something to pursue. For those of us who are young, we want to really change the culture around us any way that we can. The common belief is that those at the top are the game changers, the trendsetters, and the culture shifters. I don’t believe it for a second. And so I present to you four lies that we often buy about faithfulness. Lie #1: My present…

Beaded Butterfly Bracelets
3 May 2012 | 4:54 pmYesterday, seven teens came by to make beaded butterfly bracelets after school. We put glass beads on memory wire, added two butterfly beads as accents, and finished with a butterfly charm. The bracelets were really cute, and everyone put their own personality into their project! I also had some ring memory wire, so people did those as well as extra bracelets. And, thanks to Laurel, we also listened to a random assortment of music. If you're sad that you missed it, this project will be available at Craft Closet Cleanout on June 13. Works in progress… -

Why Does Peer Pressure Influence Teens To Try Drugs?
8 May 2012 | 2:09 pmDuring NIDA’s most recent Drug Facts Chat Day,“Kid” from Totino-Grace High School in Minnesota, asked: “Why is peer pressure such a huge factor in teens’ temptations [to experiment with] drugs and alcohol?” Risk Versus Reward New research shows that, when making a decision, teens think about both the risks and rewards of their actions and behaviors—but, unlike adults, teens are more likely to ignore the risk in favor of the reward. In a NIDA-funded study, teens driving with their friends in the car were more likely to take risks—like speeding through yellow lights—if they… -
Prescription Opioid Abuse Can Lead to Heroin Abuse
3 May 2012 | 1:36 pmYou may have heard marijuana referred to as a “gateway drug,” meaning that it can open doors to other kinds of drug abuse. But did you know that prescription painkillers can be gateway drugs to heroin? Not everyone who abuses a prescription opioid will move on to heroin—but why take the risk? It might begin innocently enough—you think that taking a family member’s prescription painkiller is safer than abusing an illicit drug like Ecstasy,… -

Music Monday - 2.
14 May 2012 | 12:26 amHello folks, Back with Music Monday on this bright awesome Monday. I know people hate Mondays but the very purpose of Music Monday is to make Mondays fun and melodious. So this week I have a few more lovely songs for you'll to listen to. 1. Ariana Grande- Put your hearts upDiscovering Ariana was truly by chance. Saw her in the side bar of suggested music while browsing through a list of my favourite youtube music videos and wanted to see her gown so clicked on it. However, turned out that the song was very chirpy and beautiful. Yes, a song that's beautiful. Its scenic and pretty and I truly… -
Who do you think you are?
12 May 2012 | 1:32 amsourceHe pushed me and my face hit the ground. I could feel the blood gushing to my nose and oozing out, I was bleeding. He pulled my collar and lifted me up. ‘Don’t ever sit in ‘my chair stupid boy’ he said confidently giving me evil glares*Pinch* Oh it is reality? Yes, bullies still exist. They always have and probably someday Super Saver will get rid of every one of them. Yes, I’ve heard of a kazillion cases of bullying but hardly do I hear standing up to a bully cases. Maybe after all we need to educate everyone that “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”… -
MET Ball 2012- An Insight
9 May 2012 | 7:09 amThe MET Ball or the MET Gala is often known as the mother of all Red Carpets (I just made that up). Anyway, it is supposedly the Oscars of the East Coast and the who's who of the industry definitely make it a point to attend it. It is an annual ball practically that celebrates the opening of the Metropolitan Museum's fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute. To know more about the MET Gala check out their page here: http://metmuseum.org/metgalaSchiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. The Verdict:Source: Just Jared via GoogleBeyonce looked stunning in this Givenchy Haute… -
The Devotion of Suspect X.
8 May 2012 | 6:49 amThe Devotion of Suspect X is a Japanese crime fiction novel by Keigo Higashino. It is a part of the Galileo detective series (which I was unaware of earlier). Frankly speaking I had not much hope from this book because 'crime' is not my forte, however currently my thoughts say otherwise. The book revolves around main characters Tetsuya Ishigami, Yasuka Hanaoka and Manabu Yukawa. However, other equally important characters include Misato Hanaoka, Detective Kusangi, Shinji Togashi. The book begins with an insight into the daily life and habits of Ishigami and Yasuka which was a little…

Will You Take THE POSITIVE PLEDGE?
13 May 2012 | 12:46 amI don't know about you, but I am so tired of all the negative people. They are everywhere...family, friends, co-workers, neighbors...everywhere. And as I've mentioned before, the reality TV shows are so negative. There's Bad Girls Club, Jersey Shore, Jerseylicious. In all of these reality TV shows, the girls (and guys) are so angry and bitter and negative. Not once, when watching one of these shows, have I seen these girls (or guys) encourage each other or be positive. And what kind of influence does this have on our tweens and… -

TEEN TRENDS: THEY'RE DRINKING WHAT??
4 May 2012 | 3:08 pmI'm sure most everyone has heard the news this week about teens drinking sanitizer, so I decided to investigate exactly how much alcohol is in a bottle of hand sanitizer. Purell - 62% Ethyl Alcohol New & Inproved Purell - 70% Ethyl Alcohol Germ-X - 63% Ethyl Alcohol Sani-hands Hand Sanitizer Wipes - 65.9% Walgreen's Brand - 65% Ethyl Alcohol "The Los Angeles Times reported some of the teenagers used salt to separate the alcohol from the sanitizer using instructions found online. If a liquid hand sanitizer contains 62 percent ethyl alcohol, that means a "drink" can be as high as 120 proof,… -
OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABES!
23 Apr 2012 | 1:42 amI have been blogging on some serious topics, so I decided to lighten it up a bit. I was riding in my car yesterday when I started thinking back to when my girls were younger. When I became a single mom, Hollie was 8 and April was 2. (They are now 21 and 16.) I'm not sure why, but I started thinking about a day when Hollie was 9. The school called me at work saying Hollie was sick and needed to be picked up. So I called my mother-in-law (MIL) to see if she could pick Hollie up for me. (I have always had a good relationship with my MIL, and I still call her my MIL. I mean after 15 years of… -
I PASSED!!!!
17 Apr 2012 | 6:49 pmI passed the PRAXIS II PLT and Content Knowledge, so this fall I will FINALLY be student teaching. I have been at this for six years!! And I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know I have neglected you, my dear readers, during this time. But this week, during Spring Break, I have been writing and have obtained a few fabulous guests to share with you on a variety of topics. The focus of my blog has been dangerous teen trends, and I plan to keep up with those, but I wanted to shine a positive light on tweens/teens, because as I've said before,…

Pinterest Secrets: How to Pin the Unpinnable
21 Mar 2012 | 12:35 pmHaving trouble grabbing a pinnable image from a webpage for Pinterest? Receiving the "we couldn't find any images: src" error message? If you see an image that allows you to zoom in but you can't right click and save the jpg, it's most likely embedded with JavaScript. A lot of retail websites (for example Urban Outfitters) use JavaScript with their images so that you can zoom in on picture details. However, this makes it unpinnable in Pinterest. To solve this problem, use this handy workaround to pin those pesky JavaScript pages.Using Firefox, right click (ctrl-click on a mac) on the body of… -
The Underage Festival
20 Mar 2012 | 4:03 pmThere is no doubt that teens love going to concerts. However, with age restrictions placed on music many venues, young people are often shut out of the fun. Enter Sam Kilcoyne, young British entrepreneur and musician behind the “Underage Festival”, an emerging indie music event for youth aged 13-17. Every spring, the Underage Festival hosts a two-day music festival in London's Victoria Park, where new bands and high profile performers such as M.I.A. ,Ellie Goulding, Crystal Castles, the XX, Florence and the Machine and Bombay Bicycle Club play to an adoring and under-served… -

Get your win on
11 May 2012 | 2:35 amIf you have ever wanted to win more often and be a success more often, then you will want to pay attention to this article. Let’s take a moment and look at losers. They are not ready for any challenges, they are not happy with the way things are and they are not willing to do anything about it. They like to blame others and rarely take responsibility. If you want to be a loser, just follow the simple path of doing nothing outstanding. But that is not who you are! You are reading this article because you want something more. You are willing to take action on what you believe… -
Have you eaten your frog today?
4 May 2012 | 7:57 amDon’t worry this is not a cookbook for frogs. It is a great business principle found in the words of . . .get this…Mark Twain. “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” Can you believe Mark Twain said something like that? Well, let me break it down for you simply: If you do the one thing you dread most about doing in your business FIRST the rest of the day will get better. If you don’t like making sales phone calls, do it first and get it out of the way. If you don’t like responding to emails, do it… -
Surviving a Bullfight
27 Apr 2012 | 12:25 pmI hope you never get in a fight with a bull, unless you are a matador, then Ole! But, if you do get in a fight with a bull, there is a secret to how to win. It is called a “querencia.” A querencia is the place where the bull always returns. When the bull gets fightened, he goes there to regroup. When he gets hit, he goes there to regroup. When he is loosing, the bull always goes to the same spot. Do you see how silly this is? A bull who knows he is on his last leg goes back where the bullfighter will know where he is! It sounds so silly, till we think about our own… -
Don’t be a fighting monkey
20 Apr 2012 | 2:55 pmImagine you are a monkey . . . it may not be hard for some of you. Now all the other monkey are scurrying around to find all the fruit that is on the ground and close to the ground. All these monkeys are fighting over the same fruits. They even fight over fruit that is sometimes rotten. In the mean time, way up high is some nice fresh fruit, but the monkeys are afraid to go up there. You choke down your fear of climbing up that high. Grab a fruit off the high branch and enjoy the best fruit you have ever eaten. You now literally have all the fruit you can eat and it is the best… -

All Diamond, No Rough
16 May 2012 | 6:53 amFrom All Diamond, No RoughReprinted from School Library Journal Teens from graphic novel guest blogger Francisca Goldsmith (with our second starred review of the week!): Russ Kick is not your typical comics geek, college prof, or earnest publisher who wants to show the uninitiated that sequential art is “real reading.” Instead, he does have some tendencies toward all three character types, but is an iconoclast out to put forward a project that is something close to the polar opposite of iconoclastic values: a pertinent, engrossing, and wholly genuine version of the literary canon on which… -
The Sleepy Hollow Family Almanac
15 May 2012 | 7:27 amFrom The Sleepy Hollow Family AlmanacReprinted from School Library Journal Teens Kris D’Agonstino’s debut is an example of that rare animal, the funny, smart, well-written novel about family that will even appeal to boys. There is a short piece on the ReadingGroupGuides website in which the author discusses how much of his book is autobiographical. Here is a relevant excerpt, “The wackiest and thereby most vexing period of my life (so far) was my mid twenties. I found that handful of years, roughly from 23 to 26, and the extended period of post-college floundering around… -
The Cove
14 May 2012 | 6:50 amFrom The CoveReprinted from School Library Journal Teens Ron Rash’s new novel is a mysterious story of forbidden love in which much of the story is told from a teen girl’s point of view. Rash once again showcases his beautiful writing and a North Carolinian, Appalachian mountain setting, earning an AB4T starred review. Rash is best known for Serena (Ecco, 2008), which was a PEN/Faulkner finalist. But a couple years before Serena came The World Made Straight (Henry Holt), a 2007 Alex Award winner. The YALSA annotation reads, “When 17-year-old Travis Shelton discovers a… -
Words of Protest, Words of Freedom
11 May 2012 | 4:00 amFrom Words of Protest, Words of FreedomReprinted from School Library Journal Teens This poetry collection has been a labor of love for its editor, Jeffrey Coleman. In an interview on the Tavis Smiley show in April, Coleman talked about searching for poems related to the Civil Rights movement for a paper he was assigned in graduate school. The project continued from there. The full contents are available on the Duke University Press webpage. This is a perfect title to highlight during Black History Month or Poetry Month, and a terrific addition to school library collections all year round. -
Identity Politics
9 May 2012 | 6:51 amFrom Identity PoliticsReprinted from School Library Journal Teens from graphic novel guest blogger, Francisca Goldsmith: Guy Delisle’s Jerusalem won the Best Comic Book Award this year at Angoulème, the premier international comics festival. A Quebecois who now has his home in France but keeps on the move to such rarely touristed places as North Korea, Delisle is the perfect investigator into life on the ground in East Jerusalem. As a foreigner (and nominal if unbelieving Christian) he had relatively free access to neighborhoods and historic sites ranging as widely as the Dome of the…
